After a site has been given a full look-and-feel treatment in a program like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, changes become more cumbersome with so many design elements to maintain. Lastly, wireframes have another huge advantage: They enable you to make big changes to a simple format with very little effort. Wireframes force you to concentrate on structural performance toward an objective rather than stylistic choices like color combinations or image selection on a page. Having something concrete (though "unfinished”) helps engage the visual parts of your brain and leads to insights that might not have come out in earlier discussions. Wireframes can draw out important details or even fundamental objectives that were not clearly defined during project discovery. Is it obvious what is of highest importance when you first look at the home page layout? Are you satisfying your main objective by bringing the right content into focus for the user? Wireframes also help you understand how users will interact with the site how many interactions (or “clicks”) it will take for a user to get to a specific area of the site. Features such as “banner images”, “sidebar tips” and “callout boxes” are much easier to understand when seen in layout. They help you understand the features and “widgets” of a site layout. Wireframes allow you to evaluate the relative sizing and placement of content. Wireframes interpret and represent the site’s structure. It’s a method for proving your “story” is being told in a compelling and accessible way. A critical early step that we leverage in the web design process is “wireframing”.
